This pristine specimen (perfectly round and unblemished) example of Calvatia
gigantea
was also found early October (2008) growing in semi-open woods
(mixed hardwoods) with walnut trees present.  Soccer ball sized.  
These mature, spore-filled specimens of Calvatia gigantea were found in spring.

These giant puffballs were among a grouping of ten found October 10th (2009)
growing in semi-open woods (mixed hardwoods) with walnut trees present.
