Rhizopogon rubescens
Possibily a variant of Rhizopogon rubescens, a false tuffle. True truffles
produce spores in a different manner. This epigeous (underground) fungus
becomes erumpent at maturity (breaking through the soil surface).
The next three photos are of a young specimen (white interior) found the following year in the same area; clay soil under white pine.
